Greetings Loved Ones,
Welcome to yet another fantastic Island Feature Friday! While I am stoked to tell you all about Night Kayaking through Adventure Center, I am disappointed to say that I have no photos or videos to support what is definitely one of my favorite St. Thomas excursions. The first time we experienced the night kayak, we were not fancy with our underwater camera just yet, and the second time, I flat out forgot the camera (doh!). Hopefully I can paint a nice word picture for y’all 🙂
You may be thinking why on earth would I want to drift around in the dark abyss that is the ocean at night, but with these clear bottom, LED lit kayaks, night kayaking is far from that. The adventure departs from the Marriott Frenchman’s Reef dock where you’re paired up and sent out. From any spectator on a balcony, it looks like large illuminated fish drifting through the bay. On the tour, you’ll encounter large reef, schools of fish, tarpon, and sting rays. The bay is also home to two sea turtles who visit for the tour each night, Shelly and Sheldon. Aside from the obvious marine life that you’ll encounter on the tour, the guides take you near some Dutch ruins, provide you with history of St. Thomas, and tell you about the reef life here in the Virgin Islands. They will also joke about how the tour is a form of marriage/family counseling as the struggle to navigate the bay with a partner can get a little too real for some people. But everyone takes a moment to pick up the paddles and take in the incredible view of Charlotte Amalie Harbor lit up at night, a view you won’t find quite as spectacular outside of the water. When circling back into the harbor, you may get a visitor in your kayak as the ballyhoos are attracted to the light and not afraid to jump in. This is the perfect excursion for families, couples, friends, and anyone who is a little nervous about snorkeling. I recommend Night Kayaking to all our visitors and to any guests looking for something unique. In my opinion, this is a St. Thomas must do!
Thanks for checking in friends! As they say in the VI, more “soon come”!
